Best first car for a young driver in Lagos under ₦4 million
If you are buying your first car in Lagos with around ₦3 million to ₦4 million, the goal should not be “fine car” first. The goal should be a car that starts every morning, survives traffic, has available parts, and will not punish you when small things fail.
In this budget, clean condition matters more than year. A well-kept older Toyota can be a better buy than a newer car with hidden gearbox or engine problems.
Cars I would shortlist:
1. Toyota Corolla
2. Toyota Camry “Big Daddy”
3. Toyota Matrix
4. Hyundai Accent
5. Honda Civic
6. Older Honda Accord
Corolla and Matrix are easier to live with if fuel economy is important. Camry gives more comfort but usually uses more fuel. Hyundai Accent can be good value, but only buy one with a mechanic who understands the model and confirms parts availability around your area.
In Lagos, avoid paying because the paint is shining. Check AC performance in afternoon heat, transmission response in traffic, engine temperature after idling, suspension noise over bumps, and the condition of the tyres.
Also verify papers before payment. A first car should not become your first court case or police station experience.
My practical advice: keep at least ₦300k to ₦500k aside after purchase. You may need tyres, fluids, brake pads, battery, alignment, or AC work immediately. The best first car is not always the cheapest one; it is the one that leaves you with money to fix the normal surprises.
