Here's your complete tokunbo inspection checklist:
BEFORE YOU GO:
- Bring a trusted mechanic (worth the N5-10k fee)
- Bring OBD scanner (or mechanic should have one)
- Go during daylight (see paint/body clearly)
- Bring flashlight (check under car)
DOCUMENTS (Check First!):
1. Customs papers (must match VIN)
2. Bill of lading (import document)
3. Proof of ownership
4. VIN on papers = VIN on car (check dashboard + door jamb)
EXTERIOR:
1. Walk around - look for dents, scratches, rust
2. Check panel gaps (uneven = accident repair)
3. Paint - run finger along panels (rough = repainted)
4. Tires - check tread depth, uneven wear
5. Lights - all must work (headlights, brake lights, indicators)
UNDER THE HOOD:
1. Engine oil - check level and color (black = needs change)
2. Coolant - check level (low = possible leak)
3. Battery - check terminals (corrosion?)
4. Belts - check for cracks
5. Leaks - look under engine (oil, coolant, transmission fluid)
6. Start engine - listen for unusual sounds
INTERIOR:
1. AC - must blow cold (expensive to fix!)
2. All buttons/switches work
3. Seats - check for tears, stains
4. Airbag light - should go off after starting
5. Check engine light - should go off (if stays on = problem)
6. Odometer - does mileage match car condition?
TEST DRIVE (MUST DO!):
1. Steering - smooth, no vibration
2. Brakes - should stop firmly, no noise
3. Transmission - smooth gear changes (auto) or clutch (manual)
4. Suspension - drive over bumps, listen for knocks
5. Alignment - car should drive straight (hands off wheel briefly)
UNDER THE CAR:
1. Exhaust - check for holes, excessive rust
2. Suspension - check for leaks, damage
3. Frame/Chassis - NO welding marks (= accident)
OBD SCAN:
Must do! Reveals hidden engine/transmission issues
RED FLAGS (Walk Away!):
- Seller refuses inspection
- Seller rushes you
- VIN doesn't match papers
- Welding marks on chassis
- Too many warning lights
- Major oil/fluid leaks
- Seller can't provide documents
NEGOTIATION TIP:
Use any issues found to negotiate price down!
Good luck! Take your time, don't rush.
