Don’t panic — check engine light doesn’t always mean something serious. Here’s how to handle it in Nigeria:
Step 1 — Get an OBD2 scan immediately. Any decent mechanic in Lagos or Abuja has an OBD2 scanner. It costs ₦500–₦2,000 to scan. This gives you the exact fault code (e.g. P0420, P0300) so you know exactly what’s wrong instead of guessing.
Common codes on the 2018 Accord:
- P0420 — Catalytic converter efficiency (common, not urgent)
- P0300-P0304 — Misfires (check spark plugs and ignition coils first)
- P0172/P0175 — Rich fuel mixture (could be O2 sensor or injector)
- P0505 — Idle control (rough idle when stationary)
If the car drives fine: It’s likely a sensor issue — O2 sensor, MAF sensor, or catalytic converter. Not immediately dangerous but don’t ignore it for more than 2 weeks.
If the light is flashing: This means active misfire — stop driving and get it checked immediately. A flashing CEL can damage your catalytic converter fast.
Always get the code first. Never let a mechanic start replacing parts without knowing the exact code — that’s how you waste money.
